AC International offers a premium-quality guardianship program for secondary students to augment the pastoral care offered by secondary schools.
Secondary-level students need special care and protection. Typically they have little experience looking after themselves and their parents are very anxious for their safety and well-being.
AC International has been involved in international education for more than eight years and has directors (themselves former international students), resident in New Zealand and China. So we have drawn on personal experience to design a program for guardianship to meet the requirements of these students.
We offer the following services to ensure their safety, security and well-being:
Student is met at Auckland International Airport and taken to the domestic terminal and put onto the correct domestic flight. Student is met at the destination by ACI staff or a school representative.
Prior to departure, the home-stay or hostel arrangements are explained to parents and student. Written material from New Zealand in English or their native language is sent to them. We contact the newly-arrived student within 48 hours of arrival to check arrangements. During the home-stay we act as advocate/interpreter for the student to ensure that the student’s problems are clearly understood.
We arrange medical and other insurance and handle renewals and claims.
If requested, we help with budgeting and management of a student’s finances.
We offer culturally sensitive support and social and emotional counselling whenever required. In addition, advice on course choice and career objectives is provided.
We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by telephone, fax or email to parents and student. We become the conduit for all (two-way) communications with parents and translate if necessary all school communications, including academic reports. We will attend parent-teacher interviews and report independently to parents quarterly.
We act as advocate for the student in any disciplinary processes to ensure that the student’s point of view is heard clearly.
In the first instance we act as advocate for the student to ensure that his/her rights are protected and his/her safety and well-being are assured. We will communicate the circumstances to parents and arrange legal representation if necessary.
We ensure that end of term arrangements for travel out of New Zealand are in place and will provide assistance at Auckland International Airport if necessary.
We will help the student with enrolment into New Zealand tertiary study. (Enrolment in an overseas university may be subject to an extra fee.)
We assist with:
Student visa renewal.•
Parents’ travel arrangements and accommodation•
Mobile phone and international telephone cards•
Bank account opening
